Students in Rhode Island chose the issue of mental health with a focus on increasing access for immigrant students. They learned that language and cultural barriers can cause an increase in anxiety and depression among immigrant students.
Their goal was to advocate for the passage of a state bill requiring the Department of Education to develop and make available a mental health curriculum for schools. Students coordinated a letter writing campaign and held one-on-one meetings with elected officials to advocate for the bill.
Following widespread power outages from winter storms, students in Texas decided to focus on the local energy crisis. They researched renewable energy options and learned about a practice of connecting solar panels to the grid system, an approach used in nearby communities.
Students reached out to net metering experts and researched how it could be implemented in their own city. Students then engaged with their local elected officials to propose a net metering incentivization program for their community.
