Mentor Qualifications

Mentoring provides opportunities for

leadership in the classroom

Generation Citizen is one of the few programs in the country that allows college students to co-lead
an actual classroom over the course of the semester. Thus, our selection process is
competitive, and our mentors are dedicated and accomplished students. Our criteria for
mentors includes:

Civic and Advocacy Expertise: Our college mentors have taken action on issues they care
about in the past and have significant advocacy experience. They use this experience to
motivate and inform their students.

Academic Excellence: Our college mentors succeed in the classroom, receiving a minimum
GPA of 3.0. This excellence helps to create high expectations for their students.

Flexibility and Positive Attitudes: It can be challenging to work in an urban classroom. Our
mentors are committed to recognizing that Generation Citizen is hard work, and that the ability
to weather the roller-coaster of the classroom with a smile will lead to positive results in the
classroom.

A Commitment to Service: Generation Citizen is a semester-long experience with life-long
ramifications. Our mentors are committed to working to end educational and political inequity in
this country.
