Elena Maker
Providence Coordinator
Elena returns in Generation Citizen this year after working as a classroom mentor at Central High School for the past two semesters. Originally from North Yarmouth, Maine, Elena is now in her junior year at Brown where she is pursuing a degree in Education with a focus on human development. She is a passionate believer in the power of education as the key to catalyzing change in our communities and intends to increase her impact on and involvement in the vital education of Providence students through the coordinator position. Last spring she became particularly interested in college access and hopes to help bridge the gap between Brown college students and Providence high school students.
Elena brings a great deal of educational experience to Generation Citizen. During her years at Brown she has had the opportunity to tutor through BearPaw tutors and mentor/tutor through Brown Refugee Youth Tutoring and Enrichment. She also as experience in teaching ESOL through the Genesis Center in Providence and through Comunicada, a small non-profit in Masaya, Nicaragua. More recently, Elena spent her summer teaching cultural understanding and awareness at HI-Chicago, a non-profit located in downtown Chicago that reaches out to the city's more culturally isolated communities. She hopes to bring these diverse experiences together to help empower all program participants, so that a real change can be achieved.
